One of 2025’s best games has already broken several world records just weeks after release

One of 2025’s early contenders for game of the year has been recognized by Guinness World Records by setting three world records within three weeks of its release.

Split Fiction, the fantastic new title by Josef Fares’s Hazelight Studios under EA, is widely regarded as a wonderful co-op experience for gamers of all levels, and it seems as though most gamers would agree, judging by the content of the records it set.

Image via EA According to the Guinness World Records, Split Fiction became the most-played local co-op game on Steam, the most-sold local co-op game within 48 hours of release, and the most-sold local co-op game within one week of release. The game has an Overwhelmingly Positive review score on Steam, too, meaning the vast majority of players have loved it.

Split Fiction also continues the Hazelight tradition of allowing one player to play the game with a friend who owns it without having to buy it themselves. The Friend Pass enables one gamer to join their friend who purchased it for no extra cost, which is just a wonderful precedent and one that I wish other co-op games would employ.

I personally have been playing Split Fiction with my girlfriend, who is not the most dedicated gamer, so asking her to spend $50 on the new title is way steeper than just having her download the Friend Pass. I wish it also set a record for how cool that was.

Split Fiction stars two writers who bring their story ideas to a company that has the technology to bring them to life by connecting the creators to it. When things go awry, a truly joyful and unique co-op experience begins, and I can’t suggest it enough.

The dynamic between the two heroines, Mio and Zoe, creates an interesting storyline that is complemented by dynamic gameplay as the duo try to make it out of an unfortunate situation together, creating an unforgettable co-op experience.

Split Fiction is also available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
