Neva had some massive shoes to fill, it’s true. Nomada Studios sophomore release returns to the same hand-animated and wordless 2D-platformer territory which saw its debut Gris become a mega-hit with critics and fans alike, yet it never seems like a safe retread. Anchoring an eco-themed fairy tale with simple but satisfying combat, movement, and puzzling, publisher Devolver Digitals latest is an easy recommendation, a crowd-pleasing platformer several shades simpler than Gris, but no less elegant or engrossing. Neva‘s sweetly melancholic adventure is fairly short and can be completed in an afternoon, but that will be one amazing afternoon.
