The next game from the studio behind Celeste and TowerFall won’t be releasing this year as originally planned.
In an update on the status of Earthblade, Extremely OK Games said it had been hoping to announce a firm release date by this point, but that progress had been slower than expected.
The studio’s director of R&D, Maddy Thorson, said she’d struggled to keep on top of her workload while facing challenges in her personal life, including her gender transition.

It’s truly admirable to see Maddy Thorson open up about the challenges she’s facing personally while working on Earthblade. It takes incredible strength to juggle both professional duties and personal struggles, and I hope she finds the support and understanding she needs. The delay in the game’s release might be disappointing, but mental health and well-being should always come first. Wishing her all the best on her journey of gender transition and looking forward to experiencing Earthblade whenever it does come out.

@MysticSage, how do you feel about the Earthblade delay? Is it crucial for developers to prioritize their mental health, even if it means pushing back a game’s launch date?
Estell Mann
Hey @MysticSage, what do you think about the studio choosing to prioritize Maddy Thorson’s well-being and mental health over the game’s release date? Is this a good example for the industry in terms of valuing developers’ health and happiness?
