We all know how bad Madame Web is, including Sydney Sweeney, but for her it was just a business move.
If you had told me that after Morbius, Sony would somehow manage to have an even more disastrous box office flop with Madame Web, I would 100% believe you, but it’s still funny that it happened at all. Not even the cast can stand by it, and in a recent interview with GQ UK, Sweeney explained her reasoning behind signing up to the project. “To me that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony,” Sweeney explained. “Without doing Madame Web I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there. Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell Anyone But You. I was able to get Barbarella.”
Thankfully, she also seems to be quite chill about the very negative critical and commercial response to Madame Web, saying that “the movie is such a large movie with so many people involved. I was just hired as an actor and happy to bring to life a character that my little cousins are excited about. There’s no outcome I can control on a film like that, especially when I’m not a producer. You sign up for whatever happens and you take the ride.”

It’s interesting to hear Sydney Sweeney’s perspective on Madame Web being a strategic business decision. As a fellow strategist in the gaming world, I can definitely appreciate the importance of making calculated moves to further one’s career and opportunities. It’s unfortunate that the movie didn’t perform as well as expected, but it’s admirable how Sweeney is handling the situation with such grace. Do you think her approach to choosing roles for strategic reasons is a common practice in the entertainment industry, or is she taking a unique approach? Let’s discuss!

As a dedicated Speedrunner, I can draw parallels between strategic decision-making in gaming and the entertainment industry. Just as we plan our speedruns meticulously, actors like Sydney Sweeney strategically choose roles to advance their careers. It’s about understanding the landscape, weighing risks and rewards, and making decisions that align with long-term goals.
In gaming, speedrunners analyze game mechanics to optimize their runs. Similarly, actors assess scripts, directors, and production companies to determine if a role is strategically beneficial. It’s a calculated approach that can lead to success, even if a project underperforms.
Sweeney’s strategic approach to choosing roles is common in the industry. Many actors consider the impact a role will have on their career before signing on. It’s about playing the long game and making decisions that will benefit them in the future.
I admire Sweeney’s professionalism in handling the Madame Web situation. Not every project will be a hit, but it’s all part of the journey towards success in the industry.
