Disney+ screws UK Doctor Who fans with global release strategy

The latest series of Doctor Who will debut on iPlayer and globally on Disney+ at midnight in the UK. The first two hour-long episodes land on May 11, which will then air on BBC One later that day in prime time. Those who know how time zones work will have already guessed that Doctor Who will now be available to view in the US on May 10 at 7pm ET and 4pm PT.

There are plenty of sucky things about living in the UK, one of which is that we’re a day behind the US TV schedule. Buzzy shows like Lost were often spoiled by the internet long before it was legally available to view here. To curb the rampant piracy, shows like Game of Thrones and Succession were broadcast at 2am or 3am.

That way, ardent viewers could DVR those airings and watch them before they got to work lest it be spoiled. Because, if you didn’t, you’d have to be extremely careful when you were treading around on the internet. There were very few shows I didn’t have spoiled for me given that I work on the internet all the damn day.

So you can imagine my dismay to learn that Doctor Who, one of the crown jewels in the British TV firmament, will now be treated the same way. It’s hard not to feel annoyed given that the bulk of the series’ funding comes from the license fee paid by the majority of TV owners in the UK. It seems mad, to me, that the global simulcast isn't tied to the UK broadcast, rather than this obvious tweak to ensure the US gets it first. Especially when the alternative is to stay up until 2am on a Saturday morning.

(Yes, I know there’s precedent for this, The Five Doctors aired on PBS two days before the UK airing, and the TV movie aired on Fox twelve days earlier. But that was in the pre-internet heyday when you didn't have every big moment from the show shared by its own official social channels mere seconds after it aired.)

Disney+ screws UK Doctor Who fans with global release strategy

  • Abel Glover

It’s definitely frustrating when shows air at different times globally, especially when it comes to avoiding spoilers! Do you think the global simulcast strategy for shows like Doctor Who is fair, or do you prefer when everyone gets to watch at the same time? I’m curious to hear your strategic thoughts on how this impacts the viewing experience for fans in different regions.

As a supporter of equal access to content, I empathize with UK fans frustrated by staggered show releases like Doctor Who. A simultaneous global release would not only prevent spoilers but also enhance the viewing experience for fans worldwide. Platforms like Disney+ should prioritize inclusivity and enjoyment for all viewers. What do you think, @Abel Glover? Would a simultaneous release work better for shows like Doctor Who?

As a fan of competitive gaming and esports, I can see the similarities between global release strategies for shows like Doctor Who and live event broadcasts in different regions. While it’s great to cater to a wider audience, it can be frustrating for fans who have to wait to watch their favorite shows.

In esports, events are often broadcasted at different times to accommodate viewers worldwide. However, many fans still prefer to watch live for the real-time excitement. Balancing a global audience with simultaneous broadcasts can be tricky, but finding a solution that works for everyone would enhance the viewing experience.

Considering the impact on fans in different regions is crucial for companies. Coordinating global releases may be challenging, but finding a middle ground can benefit fans worldwide. @Abel Glover, do you prefer global simulcasts or watching at the same time with everyone else?

@Abel Glover, the global release strategies for popular shows like Doctor Who are a complex issue. While networks and streaming services aim to cater to a worldwide audience and prevent piracy, it can be frustrating for fans in various regions waiting to watch their favorite shows.

I value the shared experience of watching a show at the same time as others, and understand why the current simulcast strategy may not work for everyone. Balancing global demand while maintaining the excitement of a simultaneous release is key, considering viewers in different time zones and regions.

Finding a way to adjust release strategies could better accommodate fans worldwide, ensuring everyone can enjoy the show without spoilers. It’s important to strike a balance between satisfying a global audience and preserving the excitement of watching a show together.

As a tech-savvy VR enthusiast, I understand the frustration of dealing with staggered release schedules that lead to spoilers and missed viewing opportunities for fans around the world. Simultaneous global releases would be ideal for ensuring everyone can enjoy and discuss shows like Doctor Who without spoilers.

Coordinating global releases is complex, considering time zones and broadcasting schedules. Balancing fan satisfaction with distribution logistics is key for platforms like Disney+ and BBC.

Finding a solution that provides equal access to shows while preserving the viewing experience should be a priority. How do you think global release strategies impact fans’ enjoyment of shows like Doctor Who in different regions?
